Top Universities in Australia: Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW & More

Why Australian universities are world-class

Australia invests heavily in education and research, and its universities consistently rank among the world's best. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, six Australian universities sit in the world's top 50 and nine in the top 100, and every course is taught in English, making Australia one of the most accessible world-class destinations for international students.

Most of the household names belong to the Group of Eight (Go8), Australia's network of research-intensive universities. Here are the ones international students ask about most, with their current global rank.

UNSW Sydney (#19, QS 2027)

For the first time, UNSW is Australia's highest-ranked university. It is the country's powerhouse for engineering, computing, business and law, with deep links to industry and a strong startup culture through its UNSW Founders program. The Kensington campus sits near Sydney's eastern beaches, a short bus ride from the city.

University of Melbourne (#22, QS 2027)

Long Australia's most prestigious name and still its top scorer for academic and employer reputation, Melbourne is known for the Melbourne Model: broad undergraduate degrees followed by specialised graduate study. It is a research heavyweight across medicine, law, engineering and the humanities, and its Parkville campus sits in one of the world's most liveable cities.

University of Sydney (#28, QS 2027)

Australia's oldest university, set in the heart of the harbour city. Its sandstone campus houses strengths in medicine, law, business, arts and science. The Camperdown and Darlington campus is about ten minutes by train from the city centre.

Australian National University (ANU) (#29, QS 2027)

Canberra-based ANU is Australia's national university, strongest in the natural sciences, international relations, economics, law and public policy. It has small class sizes, a high research output per staff member, and close ties to government and international organisations.

Monash University (#31, QS 2027)

One of Australia's largest and most international universities, with campuses across Victoria and overseas in Malaysia and Indonesia. Monash is known for pharmacy, medicine, engineering, business and design, and is particularly strong at welcoming international students.

University of Queensland (UQ) (#40, QS 2027)

Brisbane-based UQ rounds out Australia's top six, with a strong teaching reputation and research strengths in the sciences, biotechnology, agriculture and business. Its St Lucia campus sits on a bend of the Brisbane River.

Beyond the top six, UWA (#77), Adelaide University (#79) and the University of Technology Sydney (#87) also rank in the global top 100, so strong options extend well past the Go8.

Which university should you choose?

  • Australia's current #1 and strong in tech and business: UNSW
  • All-round prestige and reputation: Melbourne or Sydney
  • Research, science and policy: ANU
  • International community, health and pharmacy: Monash
  • Teaching quality and a riverside campus: UQ
  • Beach lifestyle: UNSW, Sydney, or campuses on the Gold Coast

A ranking drop or gap of a few places rarely reflects the quality of your actual course. Choose on the strength of your specific program, entry requirements, location, cost and career outcomes, not the overall number alone.

Costs and intake, in brief

International undergraduate tuition at these universities is typically around A$35,000 to A$55,000 per year, with high-demand fields such as medicine and dentistry costing more; postgraduate coursework is broadly similar. Most degrees have a main February or March intake and a smaller July intake. Always confirm the exact tuition and start dates on the program page, since fees change each year.
